The situation's taken yet another turn.
I followed Mittelwerk into town this morning, hoping this would be the moment of truth... that the world would finally lay eyes on the mysterious Enzo Valenzetti.
But it wasn't to be. Pretty soon, I realized we were heading elsewhere, and I have to admit, I was more than a little confused when we pulled into the parking lot of Sanremo Mercy Memorial Hospital (at least, I think that's the translation).
Mittelwerk went into the hospital - entered the Alvar Hanso Center for Advanced Medical Sciences (yeah, this is one of those HANSO HOSPITALS) along with a couple of his black-suited minions. A couple hours later, he came out. Shook hands with a nurse, let's call her Sophia, and left.
Nurse Sophia wouldn't talk to me. In fact, she tried to usher me out. But I think you know as well as I do. Everyone has their price. Listen to THIS.
Not sure what's worse... the fact Mittelwerk just had all the blood in his body replaced? Or, the fact that I'm not really all that surprised?
Of course, the question on everybody's lips (or the one that should be) is, "WHY WOULD HE DO THAT?"
It's a head-scratcher, I know.
And, while I haven't had too much time to wrap my brain around this one, as I see it, there are at least a few reasons why you might get an exchange transfusion:
1) You have a legitimate medical condition, like jaundice or sickle-cell anemia.
Let's assume this ISN'T the case for Mittelwerk.
2) You're a crazy health-nut who has unlimited funds and access to the world's more experimental life-extension technologies.
Not TOO far-fetched, considering, but still... I think there's more to it, like -
3) You have something inexplicably wrong with your blood, maybe not a disease per se, but... If you remember, ALVAR HANSO seems to have a problem with HIS BLOOD - could whatever it is be "going around" at The Hanso Foundation?
Now, while I kinda like this explanation, the writing on the wall points to this one, as well:
4) Along with an insane number of inoculations, you're preparing your body for some sort of hell-on-earth conditions.
Yeah. So, that's all I've got. If you've got other theories, I'd love to hear them... but...
Whatever the reason or reasons for Mittelwerk's little out-patient hospital visit, if we take a step back and examine all of this, it's pretty clear Mittelwerk is going to this island he referenced in that email (see Monday's post).
Now, why an island requiring six hundred injections and an exchange transfusion would be the desired location for this SPIDER PROTOCOL eludes me. But, I think I just heard the starter pistol.
I don't know if I can stop them.
If Nurse Sophia hasn't informed on me already, it's only a matter of time before she does. I've checked out of the hotel, and I'm duct-taping myself to Mittelwerk's every move.

guys i have a theory.... i am in the med field, and exchage transfusion are used for certain things... newborn jaundice, malaria, and sickle cell anemia.... if mittleverk is getting treatments for sickle cell..(only black people can get that) then i believe he has a black persons liver in him, and he is heading to capetown (the town of organ harvesting) and getting a new one... just a thought... what do you think?

1) I think you're looking for an island somwhere in the vacinity of Fiji. I know that's not a big stretch, and it's been mentioned, but....I think it's a safe bet.
2) I think you're dead on with #4. I think this is his way of prepping for the island visit.
3) IF Valenzetti IS alive...I think we might be able to surmise he MAY be on "the island" TM is talking about.
We know that the Dharma Initiative was a project run by Hanso, right? And we know it was made up of a bunch of scientists that have "went missing" in the late 60's or early 70's. We get more info on that in DJ dan's latest podcast. And we know "the site" TM is talking about hasn't been used by THF for some time, right? What if "the site" he's talking about was also "the site" the DI scientists disappeared TO?
And just when did Valenzetti disappear? Sort of coincidental timing, eh?
We could REALLY use a peek at that "Orientation" video/DVD that TM makes reference to in that recording you posted. Maybe GidgetGirl has access to it and can sneak it to someone? You've got helpers/friends ALL over the country (and the world) who would be happy to act as middle men if GG can't get it online.
I doubt the DJ Dan caller's Grandma was Karen DeGroot. He didn't mention Gerald DeGroot, who would have been his grandfather. I think she was probably just one of the people working on the Dharma Initiative who got sent to the island for research or whatever.

For someone in the med field you made a very sweeping generalization. Sickle Cell Anemia, while most often found in African-Americans, can still affect people of Caucasian or other backgrounds. Not that I'm discounting your theory, though, because it is still plausible.

Rachel, please go to the above address. It tells of a plane crash that happened almost 2 years ago. I'm sure a savvy person such as yourself remembers the big hoopla about it on the news. It's pretty much put Oceanic Airlines out of business. It seems to me that they believe that the plane had turned around and headed back towards Fiji. Do you think that maybe there might be an island around there, near the equator? That could be where Mittlewerk is going next. I think your next stop should be Fiji and from there, to the SP island. I just can't figure out which one right now.

Karen and Gerald DeGroot were/are two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan. Thanks to The Hanso Foundation they were able to start the DHARMA Initiative. We first learn about the DeGroots in the Swan Orientation Film in episode 3 of season 2 ("Orientation"). The whereabouts of this couple are unknown today but many theories have surfaced.
Considering the collection of savants being used to run the equation, perhaps the Spider Protocol is something akin to the human equivalent of a RAID5 storage array.
If they have each savant working on a piece of the equation that overlaps with separate pieces being worked on by 2-3 others, then if they were to "lose" one of their subjects, they would actually only lose a small piece of the whole equation because 2-3 other savants would each have some portion of the lost piece. This would allow them to replace a 'faulty' savant relatively quickly, simply and efficiently. the connection therefore between all of the savants would be a 'web' network, all connected to 2-3 other points by their shared pieces of the equation.
Hence, Spider Protocol.

RB - Either way, I think TM is planning a trip to the island in question. This island is inhabited with survivors from Oceanic Flight 815 as well as some other scientists. The author of a book based on the Valenzetti Equation, Gary Troup, who supposedly died on this flight, may also be alive and well on this island.
Word of caution though: Other members on this island were seen injecting themselves with a mysterious serum related to the Dharma Initiative - an experiment being conducted by the Hanso Foundation. It is unknown what this serum consists of, but, it is believed to related to some mysterious qualities found on the island. Use caution in your travels.
I believe sickle cell is a genetic mutation used to fight off Malaria in Africa.
So, to have sicklecell in your genes you need to have an african heritage.

Whatever it is that "cured" Thompson's cancer, and "saved" Hanso that night in Spain is probably a very intense process.

It is also quite likely that the Karma imperative mentioned in DJ Dans podcast is actually a reference to the Dharma Initiative. I think it is phonetically close enough to be mistaken during a conversation in passing or overhearing a discussion about it.

Mittlewerk's blood transfusion is creepy... maybe the Hanso Foundation has no idea what the disease is that's going on wherever TM is going and that's why he's taking every vaccination/medical procedure known to man.

I know this sounds nuts but this whole scenario is crazy so I am tossing it out there anyway. What is Mittlewerk = Hanso? Let me explain. The Hanso Foundation obviously has some amazing medical break throughs including curing someones cancer. Alvar is an old man but if THF found a way to turn back the clock so that he was a man say in his forties then Mittlewerk and Hanso could be one and the same. It certainly would explain why he hasn't been seen in a very long time and why Mittlwerk gets to run the show without any sign of the big cheese. Just trying to think outside the box.
Some reasons for complete blood transfusion:
Jaundice/alcohol liver disease, Rh disease (Dr. Alexander S. Wiener/Dr. Douglas Arnold -- done on infants), Viral Platelet Disease, high billiruben levels, leukemia (high white blood count), anemia-geophagia syndrome, and (for Marvel readers), of course, to cure one of vampirism.
So is Mittlewerk suffering from alcoholism, leukemia or vampirism?
He does work for a major world corporation ... my money's on vampirism. ;)

My one question is why would Mittlework have sat photos of an island in Lake Superior (of course they had never expected that we would actually find it thus ABC needed to do a rewrite and try to go on with there preplotted story) and another (although unseen by the glasses camera) in the ocean near the equator?

Hey Rachel, I have to commend you on the quality of your covert recordings. Really good stereo imaging and nice and clean. You must have had a few good covert mics on you to record that. Although with hindsight I'm even more impressed with that long range shotgun microphone recording. Perfect stereo on that too and from how far? Wow. You have to let me know what the microphone was because something that can record perfectly clear stereo from that far away is worth getting hold of. Keep up the good work!

Anyway, this does remind me a lot of Hanso's blood issues. I still have a theory that Hanso *is* Mittlewerk. Perhaps his change in appearance is partially due to what he is going through. Some kind of anti-aging thing.
If that's true or not I don't know, but I really do believe that there is no co-incidence to Mittlerks Vegetarian (or was it Vegan) diet. He has to maintain a certain diet and avoid meats because of his treatments. He doesn't seem the kind to care about animal cruelty after all. Also I'm sure this must have something to do with Heavy Water in the blood.
The Flame is a name of one of the hatches shows on the blast door map. obviously, the "karma imparative" is actually the dharma initiative

Those types of vaccines are recommended by the WHO in a couple of third world nations. But I think the ones that are most significant to you are all all in Central Africa.
Here's CDC recommendations for traveling adults:
Additional Vaccines. Yellow fever vaccine is recommended if traveling to certain parts of Africa and South America. Hepatitis B vaccine should be considered for those who will live six months or more in areas of developing countries where Hepatitis B is prevalent (Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the islands of the South and Western Pacific, and the Amazon region of South America), and who will have frequent close contact with the local population. Hepatitis A Vaccine and/or Immune Globulin (IG) is recommended for travelers to all areas except Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Northern and Western Europe and North America (except Mexico). Typhoid vaccine is recommended for travelers spending four weeks or more in areas where food and water precautions are recommended—many parts of the world, especially developing countries. Meningococcal vaccine is recommended for travelers to sub-Saharan Africa, especially if close contact with the locals is anticipated, or if travel occurs during the dry season from December through June. Japanese Encephalitis or Tick-borne Encephalitis vaccines should be considered for long-term travelers to geographic areas of risk. Cholera vaccine is of questionable benefit to travelers of any age.
As you can see, one location in common on those lists is Africa; to narrow down the location further, if you get a chance to talk to her, ask if Meningococcal vaccines were on the docket.
Maybe this was already mentioned, but has it occurred to anyone else that Rachel is Mittelwerk's unknown daughter? That TM somehow played a part in her mother's death? The "in my genes" comment, the look of recognition on TM's face when he looked at her (she looks like her mother?) Just a thought...
Well it looks like Mittlewerk and Hanso both had the same problems. Maybe they were both exposed to some kind of radiation ('the incident' anyone?).
And then the Valenzetti equation - maybe Hanso was trying to be a good guy. I mean the equation predicts the end of human life right? Maybe Hanso got the equation in order to work out the variables, and if so, he could ensure that factors wouldn't contribute to what was needed for the end to happen. If the equation said like 'such and such countries have to have A-bombs multiplied by number of countries without' and all that, Hanso could manipulate it so the apocolypse would never happen (if we take the equation as valid). So maybe Hanso wasn't that evil afterall???? Maybe Mittlewerk's taken on his greater good approach, only to a crazy psycho degree working those savants 24/7 and all the rest.

I've always bought into the idea that Alvar was truly trying to contribute to the greater good. Unfortunately, Thompson, Mittlewerk, et al. saw the "God-like" power the projects could give people. I think Alvar's disappearance is actually pretty unnerving and that the "new" faces of the Hanso Foundation have turned something "good" into something "evil."

I agree with whoever says we should see the Orientation DVD. It would sure as hell answer a number of questions and we'd finally understand some motives. Mittlewerk seemed quite happy to flog it about to Peter and the like, maybe GidgetGirl could sneak us a copy. Right now Rach has no leads other than stalking-til-we-get-lucky, so I think the initiative needs to be taken and that DVD needs viewing!
*P.S. If Mittlewerk does mail Thompson the DVD like he says, couldn't there be a classic case of 'lost in the mail'?
Rachel, it's time for you to come clean about who you really are and what is motivating your actions. You gave us pictures of Hugh McIntyre supposedly cheating on his wife, but we already got that information from Persephone.
You've said you see the equatorial island in your mind's eye, and yet you refuse to tell us what you saw that we didn't see. You ask for our help but don't give us what we need to do so.
Today you gave us microfilm of Capetown Inquisitor pages regarding Hanso operations that conflict in date and information we had from Persephone. What's this all about Rachel? Are you using us to do your dirty work for you? You need to explain yourself and these discrepancies NOW.

Yeah, good luck getting Rachel to admit anything. I appreciate her exposing the Hanso foundation. But Rachel is all about exposing other peoples dirty laundry and not telling anybody jack about her self. I'm honestly surprised she admitted to be Persephone. I'm all for bringing the Hanso Foundation down, but Rachel has as many secrets as they do. I'm honestly surprised somebody from hanso hasn't put up personal information about Rachel at their own rogue site in order to discredit her.
Agreed not only do the dates on the paper you provided us not jive with those received by Persephone, but the text doesn't match the dates either.
What happened with your mom. It's clear your motivation is personal. I'm not sure we should trust someone with personal motivations, they are quite often way off-base. I'm not saying you are Rachel, but I think an explanation is in order.
Even with the information you have provided, it doesn't give a clear picture of any wrong-doing on the part of the Hanso Foundation. Many of the documents you have provided as evidence are out of context and are not verifiable.

Rachel, I'm not so sure your mother is dead. A caller to the latest DJ Dan broadcast told a story of his grandmother disappearing into what clearly was the Dharma Initiative, but someone went so far as to actually hold a funeral for his grandmother and create an official story that she was dead.

I will add my voice to the others asking Rachel to come clean. I have a few questions (trying to be more specific then "who are you")
1) What is the deal with your financial resources? You said you were running out of money, but you can still afford plane tickets and bribes and you are using some expensive equipment for your sleuthing. Where do you funds come from? Your on quite a long vacation right now, but you must have some kind of background going on there to build up the resources you have hit the road with. What was your job, or were your parents well off?
2) What's the circumstances of your Mothers death? Tough question I know, but if it's your motivation you need to share it. Do you know for a fact that she's dead. Who was she? Why does her death drive you to find out about the Hanso Foundation?
3) Why do you suddenly trust Gidget Girl so Much? Do you know, or suspect who she is?
4) How did you get hold of all the information that started your campaign against Hanso? You must have started somewhere.

Also from the latest DJ Dan podcats a place named the Flame was mentioned somewhere in the south pacific. From the TV show LOST which we have been thinking is perhaps linked or based on this truth there is a place called the Flame and a bunch of other stations where the Dharma Initiative workers conduct experiments. This Island also has the Black rock which is probably the Route this new boat is going to and this island would need alot of vacinations. Also one of the people on he island is called Sun Paik who is none other than Mr Paik the person who created the boat for hanso's daughter!

The most important thing right know seems to be what is wrong with Mittelwerks blood. It is also presumed that whatever is wrong with him was wrong with Hanso. Therefore why shoudnt RB ask the doctor that treated Hanso in Madrid?
It could be quite simple: Find which hospital Vasquez works at (it cant be hard for a hacker, and there is a finite amount of hospitals in the Madrid area). Then talk to her posing as Hanso's personal physitian and ask for the results of the blood test. There would be no reason for the good doctor to doubt RB as anyone who knows about the letter must be close to Hanso. Creativity could be added to spice up the urgency of the situation.
Maybe he has too many nanobots in his blood?
