So, by all accounts, yesterday took things in an unexpected direction. Guess it shouldn't be shocking to find out The Hanso Foundation's origins include not only the weapons trade in this century, but the SLAVE TRADE in centuries past. I guess old Alvar Hanso comes by his hypocrisy honestly.
But the questions still remain... How is this relevant NOW?
Why is Mittelwerk researching hundred-year-old SHIPPING LANES?
Does all this CONNECT to something greater?
Now, I think it's pretty clear, Mittelwerk likes to keep his hands clean. He's not offering up any answers - or the leverage to get them. So, if there's no dirt to be found on Mittelwerk, how do we proceed? Well...

I have to hand it to Hugh, he's a smart tactician. I guess THIS is how Mittelwerk knows when to pull a tarp over the mass graves. In regards to the phone number, the first part of the message sounds like verizon, but as we all know, they are in on this too, we know this because of the retrievers of truth.

Why is Mittelwerk worried about shipping lanes? Mittlewerk was comparing shipping lanes (pre 1900) to todays shipping lanes (post 2000) to find deviations in the course.
Alvar (Magnus Hansos son - or possibly a 200yr old Magnus himself) has found the fountain of youth and is working on bringing this to the masses.
Mittelwerk is evil and wants the fountain of youth for himself - he needs to find the island where the Black Rock is wrecked to find Alvar(Magnus) - that is why is looking for shipping lanes.
Alvar never let anyone know where the fountain of youth is or have direct access to the valenzetti equation.
Alvar is trying to save humanity by keeping/working with the "others: on the island.

But the point is that the guy is one of those Family Values guys who tell the world that people who cheat are evil and will go to hell. The problem is that he is one of those guys. 2 things.
1. He thinks he is above society's moral code.
2. More character-building as he is up to no good in secret. What other vices, projects, etc is he involved with that he feels he can continue because he is above society's moral code.

Perhaps Ms. Widmore isnt the only one looking for the island. Perhaps Hanso, or Mittlewerk, is trying to find the island. After all, DHARMA did go missing...
Let's say that he is one of those family values guys that tells people they're going to hell if they cheat. We've had scandals in the past where guys like that came out as cheaters. All I'm saying is that, besides the moral outrage, everything Rachel is telling us about Hugh is old hat. It's been done before. People have come out as cheaters and hypocrites. The general public makes a mental note of that, sighs a little with disappointment, and moves on accordingly.
I'm just wondering if Hugh's infidelities are really going to matter when we get to the meat of the evil things he is doing. Let's say he's doing some huge evil thing with the GWC. Do you think he'd be doing it anyway, with or without the mistress?
